BB
One day, when I was taking the MRT in Gongguan, my card made two “beep” sounds as I passed through the ticket gate. Suddenly, a staff member stopped me and checked the photo on my disability EasyCard against my face—perhaps because I didn’t look visually impaired. After verifying it, she asked whether I wanted to swipe the card again so that it wouldn’t make two beeps in the future. I didn’t quite understand what she meant at that moment, but my card had already been “fixed.” From that day on, whenever I passed through the gates, I sounded just like everyone else—only a single beep. To reclaim the second beep that once belonged to me, I designed a gate that produces a “beep” sound. When people pass through it, the gate emits either a single “B” or a double “BB” based on some physiological feature of the person. Yet the person will never know what that criterion is.
